Weight reduction pays off everywhere a car accelerates, brakes, corners or changes direction, and because wheels and tyres are unsprung mass, cutting their weight matters more than almost anything else you can do. The iconic forged aluminium SW388 takes its name from its original weight of 3.88kg, and when it launched in 1996 that lightness surprised the world.
A quarter of a century on, safety standards have tightened considerably and shedding weight has become far harder. Spoon still set the same 3.88kg target for this new N-ONE-fit SW388, and even though it keeps the original 15-inch size, meeting today's much stricter strength standards with the old production method proved extremely difficult. After repeated fatigue-strength simulation, prototyping and physical testing, Spoon's engineers landed on a finished weight of 3.84kg, lighter than the original target.
The wheel carries five dedicated design features: a stepped-shape centre pad that adds rigidity around the mounting holes while cutting weight; a wave-shaped well at the valve seat for further weight saving plus better heat dissipation and rigidity; hollow Omega-section spokes for the same reasons; an arched, donut-shaped hub mounting face that concentrates clamping pressure at the outer edge to avoid stress concentration and boost mounting rigidity; and a reinforced, convex-section bead seat that resists tyre-induced stress and prevents slip under high-grip tyres.
Please note: JAWA strength standard compliant, forged and machined aluminium alloy with an alumite finish. Weight 3.84kg, centre bore 56.1mm. Recommended for the N-ONE (JG3) at standard ride height. Clean with a neutral detergent only - strong alkaline or acidic cleaners can discolour the finish.
