- Description
This progressive spring was developed with the goal of making the Civic hatchback's exhilarating driving feel sportier without compromising comfort. For sports driving on winding roads or mini circuits, improving cornering performance is important. Increasing the spring rate easily improves cornering performance, but it also reduces comfort.
We focused on the shape of the spring as a way to increase the spring rate without compromising comfort, and adopted a barrel-shaped spring. Unlike ordinary straight-wound springs, barrel-shaped springs can have multiple rates due to differences in the spring diameter (size of winding). Taking advantage of the characteristics of this shape, we have created a suspension that can use a low rate around 1G, which controls ride comfort, and a high rate for high-speed cornering.
The spring rate was tested on various stages, such as winding roads and mini circuits, and was set to 3.4kgf/mm for the front and 3.4kgf/mm for the rear (normal rate F/2.7 R/2.8). The progressive springs, which balance sporty performance and ride comfort, make the Civic hatchback an even more exhilarating car. No sacrificed comfort, developed to deliver even better and sporty driving experience.
Cornering performance improvement is crucial for driving mini circuits and winding roads. Increasing spring rate is the most obvious way to improve the cornering performance, however this may cost you some comfort.
So, to keep the driving comfortable and still increase the spring rate, we chose the barrel spring. Unlike straight springs, these have multiple spring rates through them based on the difference in diameter. Having used the advantage of this shape, we came up with the suspension with the rate as low as 1G for your driving comfort, and higher rates for high-speed cornering and driving.
Carefully tested in various conditions, such as mini circuit and winding roads, the rate was set to 3.4kgf/mm for the front and 3.4kgf/mm for the rear springs (with normal rate of F/2.7 and R/2.8)
