- Description
The ideal body construction advocated by SPOON is "rigidity".
The newly developed "Motion Control Beam" is a product that improves the turning ability during cornering and comfort and quality for street use by controlling the rigidity of the front and rear ends of the body, where twisting occurs the most during driving, with a specially constructed damper.
Since the 1990s, we at Spoon have participated in touring car races based on commercially available cars, and have been working on product development with the theme of how to utilize the technology, knowledge, and experience gained from racing without compromising the comfort and quality required for street use.Among SPOON's body parts born from feedback from the racing scene, the most representative product is the "Rigid Collar", which has been on the market since 2007. With Rigid Collar, the gap between the body, subframe, and fastening bolts is filled with a specially shaped collar, and the monocoque and subframe are rigidified by firmly fastening them. This time, we focused on "suppressing twisting at the body end" that occurs during cornering and "achieving both comfort and quality required for street use".
The "Motion Control Beam" is fastened to the front of the front reinforcement and the rear of the rear end panel with a damper equipped with a special friction mechanism. By installing a friction damper, we have succeeded in significantly reducing body twist while maintaining a certain level of rigidity against the diagonal twist on the body side caused by load transfer.Although a normal reinforcing brace alone can ensure rigidity, it increases micro-vibrations. By installing this friction damper, the micro-vibrations are absorbed, and a high-quality ride without noise is achieved.
The "Motion Control Beam" has a simple structure of a high-resilience spring and a friction plate. For large inputs of body twist that occur when cornering, the high-resilience spring works in the same direction as the brace to suppress the twist. On the other hand, small inputs are finely suppressed by the elastic force of the friction plate. By separately controlling this non-constant twist input, it is now possible to suppress it over a wide range.
