Hybrid Racing Formula Intake for the Honda Civic Type R FK8

Hybrid Racing wanted one intake that covered everything an FK8 owner asks for: more power across the rev range, a louder turbo and induction note on throttle, a clean look in the engine bay, a filter you can reach without tools, and enough sensor range to stay useful as the build grows. Getting there took three MAF housings, seven velocity stacks, a run of filters, flow-bench work, sixteen material and shielding samples and sixty-five dyno pulls. The result is the Formula Intake, and we stock it here at Torque-GT.

How much power does it make?

Power is the first question, so start there. Hybrid Racing ran three comparisons on the same 2019 FK8, ordered here from the biggest gain to the most representative.

Bolt-on only, factory ECU untouched

The first test kept the standard airbox and an untouched OEM Honda ECU. Fitting the Formula 76mm Street, with nothing else changed, took power from 270.2 to 300.2 wheel horsepower. No check engine light, no knock correction anywhere in the log. A 30 wheel horsepower gain from a straight swap is a big number on a tightly managed turbo car, where a bolt-on intake usually does little. Some of that comes from airflow and some from the new MAF signal shifting the ECU's fuelling and load maths. The car responded hard either way.

With FlashPro, same base map, both intakes

With Hondata FlashPro fitted, Hybrid Racing ran both intakes on the same Base Map before loading any Formula-specific MAF scaling. The curves stayed close through the middle of the pull, then the Formula pulled ahead towards the limiter. Treat this as a real-world halfway point rather than the final tuned picture.

Tuned properly, the honest like-for-like

For the last test, Hybrid Racing set the MAF scaling for each intake and tuned the car around each one. This is the closest apples-for-apples comparison you'll find, and the figure to expect on a tuned FK8. The Formula added about 7 wheel horsepower and 8 lb-ft of torque on average from 2,500 to 6,800 rpm, with the gain spread across most of the pull instead of sitting at a single peak.

Which MAF housing should you run?

The Formula comes in two versions. Run the 76mm Street on a standard or lightly modified FK8, whether you're on the OEM Honda ECU or already on FlashPro. Run the 89mm Race on a higher-power build that needs the extra MAF sensor range so your ECU and tuner keep reading airflow accurately. Both versions use the same factory Honda MAF sensor, and only the housing and its matched velocity stack change between them.

76mm Street

The 76mm Street suits most standard and lightly modified FK8s. It's the housing Hybrid Racing used for the comparisons above and it runs on the factory ECU. If your car is on FlashPro, load the Formula MAF scaling so the ECU reads the new intake path.

89mm Race

The 89mm Race suits higher-power builds that are running into the factory MAF sensor's limit with the 76mm Street, or cars being built around a bigger turbo. You can tune it on a lightly modified FK8, though it gives more sensor range than that car needs. Past about 400 wheel horsepower, ask your tuner to watch MAF voltage and let the datalog make the call, not the power figure on its own. On Hybrid Racing's 433.5 wheel horsepower shop FK8, the 76mm Street signal hit 4.96 volts and stopped climbing near the top of the pull. The 89mm Race kept that same sensor inside its range. The 89mm Race inlet needs Hondata FlashPro, or an equivalent that can apply the matching MAF calibration.

More sound, easier servicing

The factory airbox muffles almost everything. The Formula opens it up: a deeper induction note as the engine loads, crisper spool on throttle, and a sharper release from the recirculating valve as you lift. The car feels more alive when you push it, then settles down at a steady cruise.

Release two OEM-style quick-release clips and one clamp to inspect, service or swap the filter, with no need to pull the airbox from the car. The red oiled-cotton filter washes and reuses. Clean it every 5,000 miles per the service sticker, let it dry fully, then re-oil it with a light coat and keep the oil away from the MAF sensor.

Secondary cold-air inlet

Flow-bench and dyno work showed the intake breathed better with a second source of outside air, so it made the production design. The Formula keeps the factory grille feed and adds two lower inlet tubes behind the bumper near the brake ducts. Together they give the filter more inlet area and a second supply of outside air.

Built for the heat

The filter sits sealed inside an enclosed airbox instead of hanging out next to the radiator and turbo. Hybrid Racing moulds the airbox from XLPE and fits a reflective shield on the face towards the turbo. They compared sixteen material and shielding samples first. XLPE soaked up heat slower than aluminium, and the reflective material rejected radiant heat best, so the production part pairs the two.

Fitment and installation

The Formula fits every 2017 to 2021 Honda Civic Type R FK8, including the 2021 Limited Edition. It takes the factory MAF sensor and reuses the factory mounting points, intake seal and rubber grommets, with no cutting, drilling or bumper removal.

Most installs take one to two hours with basic hand tools. To fit the lower air feeds, raise the front of the car and support it, remove the driver-side front wheel and fold back the inner fender liner. Hybrid Racing's install guide walks you through every step. The supplied coupler fits the factory turbo inlet pipe and measures around 69mm inside where it meets the inlet, so if your car runs an aftermarket turbo inlet, check its connection size before you order, as you may need a different coupler.

Formula Intake, your questions answered

Does the Formula Intake need Hondata FlashPro or a tune?

The 76mm Street runs on the factory ECU. Hybrid Racing's test car showed no check engine lights and no knock correction in the factory-ECU log. For the best results, run FlashPro to scale the factory MAF sensor for the intake. The 89mm Race inlet needs FlashPro, or an equivalent that can apply the matching MAF calibration.

When should you choose the 89mm Race?

Choose it when your datalogs show the 76mm Street closing in on the factory MAF sensor's 5.0-volt limit, or when your build plan includes a bigger turbo and a lot more power. You can tune the 89mm Race on a lightly modified FK8, though it gives more sensor range than that car needs, so pick it up when you need the range now or you have firm plans for those upgrades. Past about 400 wheel horsepower, have your tuner watch MAF voltage. The log makes the call, not the power figure alone.

Can you switch from the 76mm Street to the 89mm Race later?

Yes. Both versions share the same airbox, filter, outside-air feeds, coupler and factory Honda MAF sensor. Converting later takes the other MAF housing, its matching velocity stack and a tuning solution.

Will the Formula Intake throw a check engine light?

Hybrid Racing didn't see any on their test car. Mods, elevation, weather and calibration choices all affect how the FK8's ECU responds. For the best results, run FlashPro to scale the factory MAF sensor for the intake.
