Spoon Sports Brake Caliper Guide

Spoon Sports Brake Caliper Guide - torquegt

Mike Gratton |

One of the most popular and visually recognisable Spoon Sports products, their brake calipers are an iconic part that not only looks awesome behind the wheel, but also provides a real world boost to your braking performance.

Unbeknown to many, there are actually several types of Spoon Sports brake caliper, each one fitting different models and requiring different parts for fitting. Here's our ultimate guide to each caliper type and what you need to know to fit a set of these to your Honda!

Twinblock Caliper

The OG Spoon Sports brake caliper, the Twinblock is, as the name might suggest, made from two blocks of aluminium and uses an unequal diameter, opposed 4 piston layout. Combined with a significant weight reduction over the factory sliding calipers (2400g vs 5200g), the result is greater brake control and improved heat dissipation allowing you to push your brakes harder and for longer.

  • Designed for: Older B-series-era Honda models such as the EK9 and DC2

Monoblock Caliper

Manufactured from a single precision die-case block of aluminium, the Monoblock caliper uses an opposing piston configuration and is significantly lighter than factory calipers. Originally designed for the S2000, these are now available for a wide range of models.

There are actually two distinct types of caliper, easily denoted by their part numbers. Kits with the part number "45020-MBR" use a rear rotation caliper, with part numbers "45020-MBF" using a forward rotation caliper. The distinction between these is the positioning of the caliper on their intended application and the relative layout of the pistons. Each caliper uses 4 pistons, but these are not equal in size. The pair of leading pistons (the ones that meets the rotating edge of the disc first) are smaller, so as to provide optimal braking balance and reduce uneven wear on the pads.

  • Designed for: K-series and F-series Honda models from around 2000 onwards, such as the S2000, EP3, DC5, CL7, FN2, and some B-series models.

  • Designed for: Newer generation, non-Type R Civic models, such as the FK7, FL1, and FC1.

Full Monoblock Caliper 4 POT

  • Designed for: Smaller Honda Kei cars like the N-One and S660.

Using one of these caliper types, it's possible to find a setup that will fit a wide range of Honda models, however here's a list of the most common tried and tested setups.

  • Integra Type R DC2 (96 spec & 98 spec)

  • Civic Type R EK9

  • S2000 AP1 / AP2

  • Civic Type R EP3 / FN2

  • Civic EG6 / EK4

  • Fit / Jazz GE8 / GK5

  • Integra Type R DC5

  • Accord Type R CL7

  • CR-Z ZF1 / ZF2

  • Civic Sport FK7 / FC1 / FL1

Detailed Fitment Guides

Each model of Honda will require different parts to fit the various types of Spoon calipers. Some are simply bolt-on and re-use factory pads and discs, others require a selection of specific parts.

Here's our definitive guide to the most common applications and what you'll need.

Integra Type R DC2 (96 Spec, 4×114 hubs)

Required Parts:
Fitting Notes:
  • The calipers are designed for the larger 282mm rotors used in later 98 spec DC2 models which had the 5x114.3 PCD hubs. As such, the installation on 96 spec models, with their smaller discs, requires Spoon’s conversion rotors and inner spacers between the rotor and hub. Upgrading to braided brake hoses and a one-inch brake master cylinder is also highly recommended, but not mandatory.

  • This caliper requires Civic EK9 / Integra DC2 (98 spec) / NSX pattern pads.

Recommended Parts:

Integra Type R DC2 (98 spec, 5x114.3 hubs) & Civic Type R EK9

There's actually two choices for the EK9 and the DC2 98 spec, depending on what wheel size you're running and brake disc size you want.

The Twin Block setup uses a 282mm brake disc, so will fit under 15" wheels in most cases, whereas the Monoblock setup uses a larger 300mm brake disc, so 16" wheels are necessary. In either case, depending on what wheels you're using, it's important to check clearance.

Twinblock Required Parts (For 15 inch Wheels):
Monoblock Required Parts (For 16 inch Wheels):
Fitting Notes:
  • Twinblock calipers are a direct replacement for OEM calipers. They work seamlessly with OEM brake pads and rotors on both the EK9 and DC2 (98 spec) and require no extra parts.

  • Monoblock calipers require the Spoon 300x26mm conversion discs. While some 300×28mm rotors can be used, pad choices might be limited due to the additional thickness of the disc.

Recommended Parts:

S2000 (AP1 / AP2)

Required Parts:
Fitting Notes:
  • These calipers are a direct replacement for the OEM calipers and utilise EP3/S2000 type pads. They are wider than the factory sliding calipers, so it may be necessary to use spacers for factory wheels to clear them.

Recommended Parts:

Civic Type R EP3 & Civic Type R FN2

Required Parts:
Fitting Notes:
  • These calipers are direct OEM replacements and are compatible with the existing brake pad pattern and brake discs.

Recommended Parts:

Civic EG6 / EK4

Required Parts:
Fitting Notes:
  • Inner spacers are necessary to center the rotor within the caliper. Longer hub bolts are recommended due to the increased spacing.

  • This caliper requires Civic EK9 / Integra DC2 (98 spec) / NSX pattern pads.

Recommended Parts:

Integra Type R DC5

Required Parts:
Fitting Notes:
  • Direct fit for the Integra DC5, works with standard brake discs, but does require EP3 / S2000 pattern brake pads.

Recommended Parts:

Accord Euro R CL7 & CRZ (ZF1 / ZF2)

Required Parts:
Fitting Notes:
  • Fitment to both the Accord CL7 and CRZ requires Spoon 300x26mm conversion brake discs and EP3 / S2000 pattern brake pads.

Recommended Parts:

Additional Models Summary:

  • Fit / Jazz (GE8 / GK5): Similar setup to Civic EG6/EK4.

  • Civic FK7 / FC1 / FL1: Features the 6POT caliper with a custom 312mm rotor.
