Drifting is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the 350Z. But this 380RS has redefined my understanding of the Z33 chassis and served as a sharp reminder of just how capable NISMO were when they got their chance to go racing.
Imported by us here at Torque GT, this Z looks fairly understated at first glance. But once you dig into the lore, it becomes clear this isn’t just another Nissan. Only 300 units of the 380RS were ever produced, making it one of the rarest Z-cars Nissan have built.
After driving it, I was genuinely taken back by how capable and well-rounded it felt. So let’s shed some light on this fairly unknown Fairlady...
Built for the Track, Tamed for the Road
The 380RS was developed to support Nissan’s participation in the Super Taikyu series, where the full-fat 380RS-Competition race car took five wins and clinched the overall 2007 championship.
The road-going 380RS is essentially a de-tuned version of that competition car. Less hardcore, but with just enough carry-over to completely change how it feels on the road. It’s sharp, direct, but pleasant to drive on a daily basis.
The Engine
Forged in the heat of the 2006 Tokachi 24-Hour Race, this 3.8-litre version of the 350Z’s VQ35HR was purpose-built for the 380RS-Competition.
The road-going car retains key features from the race version, including the crankshaft, valve springs and retainers, pistons, camshafts, and engine control module. It’s not just a bored-out 350Z. The intake manifold, exhaust system, air–fuel ratio, ignition timing, and VTC have all been fine-tuned for better street use.
With 350 horsepower and a kerb weight around 1,500kg, you get a 0–60mph time of around 4.5 seconds. Not mind-blowing by modern standards, but I'm willing to bet launching this thing with its 6-speed manual is infinitely more fun than your average DSG hot hatch.
Whilst driving it came to mind that I’d have no hesitation touring across Europe in this thing. At low RPM, it cruises happily. Thanks to its naturally aspirated 3.8-litre V6, throttle response is sharp and the torque delivery is linear, making it work in whatever gear you’re in.
On the other hand, start working through the gears and it transforms. Keep the revs above 5,000rpm and you’re treated to an aggressive induction sound and an exhaust note that urges you on. You’ll be running out of road before you run out of revs.
The NISMO Bits
I don’t know why, but I half-expected to spend the day fighting the back end of the car... To my surprise, the 380RS is unbelievably dialled-in, with a confidence-inspiring level of grip. The diff does a great job of vectoring power, and with the traction systems on, it keeps things nicely in check. Switch them off and I imagine you’d be given a lot more play.
It comes equipped with NISMO-tuned shocks and dampers and Yamaha body dampers, which do a brilliant job of eliminating chassis vibrations. This all adds to the 380RS’s incredibly composed ride quality.
A NISMO aero kit nods to its racing heritage, especially the aggressive rear diffuser, which protrudes proudly from the back end.
The Interior
Inside, it's driver focused with a few key features to make it that little bit more special. There are black and red contrast accents throughout, with NISMO plaques and badging to remind you this isn’t your average 350Z. The short-throw shifter, closely spaced pedals, and performance gauges give it a real sense of purpose
You also get a solid audio system, respectable infotainment, and some seriously comfortable sports seats, which I thought were surprisingly tame for a motorsport inspired coupe.
Rarity
Upon a glance the 380RS is at danger of being mistaken for just a 350Z NISMO, start looking closely and true jdm fans will notice how special this car is... The unique engine cover is a good giveaway. With only 300 made and less than 100 of those in black, this limited edition has got promising residuals and it will certainly earn you bragging rights at your local cars and coffee meet.
