n recent years Toyota has been on a mission, injecting the GR brand derived from motorsport into some very special models. The GR Yaris is an exceptional hot hatch… totally bespoke, it really put Toyota back in the limelight.

The next project to be given the GR treatment is this… The Toyota GR86. Its predecessor, the GT86 was launched back in 2012 prior to the GR brand, but this model was a sign of Toyota starting to get back into what they do best.

A back to basics, lightweight coupe with a highly engaging chassis. It was a modern interpretation of the much loved JDM AE86 that became a global icon thanks to Initial D etc.

The GR86 picks up from where the GT86 left off. A totally new car, including the engine which remains naturally aspirated, but has gone up in capacity from a 2.0 litre boxer engine, up to a 2.4 litre boxer.

This gives the GR86 significantly more grunt with 228bhp, one of the sticking points for many with the GT86 where many felt 197bhp wasn’t on par with the exceptional handling.

0 to 60 is dealt with in 6.3 seconds compared to the GT86’s 7.6 time, whilst the top speed is 140mph. The 6 speed manual is fantastic, this is a proper driver's car.

The GR86 is the car automotive fans always wished the GT86 to be. That’s evolution for you.

Overall, the GR86 has had glowing reviews from the big automotive brands like Top Gear, Evo Magazine etc. It’s not surprising, once you get behind the wheel, you understand. In major group tests it has taken on far more expensive alternatives, like Porsche's 718 Cayman and come out on top in some cases. Bang for buck, we’re not sure it currently gets better.
