Toyota released the GR Yaris in 2020… The Automotive press couldn’t have applauded loud enough for this Homologation Special - A term we are used to using for those cherished 90’s rally icons, like the 22B, TME etc…
The GR Yaris is probably the closest thing currently on sale to Impreza's & Evo's of old and we couldn’t be more grateful for it!
In 2020, Toyota planned to sell 750 at launch in the UK, but upped that target to 1,000 for 2021. It had been such a huge hit, that in July 2021, Toyota said that every single example due to arrive in the UK up until 2023 had been sold, so your only option was to get on the waiting list for a new one.
However, since then Toyota have had such an unbelievably high demand that it’s now completely unavailable to order!
Luckily for you, we have this stunning Precious Black Metallic (£585 option), 2021 example available in the showroom to get your hands on. It has covered 11,800 miles since first registered on 19/11/2021 and is ready for its next chapter of ownership.
The GR isn’t simply a standard Yaris with a fancy bodykit and more power. Toyota did the job properly, creating an entirely new car from the ground up.
The three 3 door only body shell has a significantly lower roof line than the standard Yaris… The roof being carbon fibre saving 3.5kg alone. The door skins, bonnet and boot are aluminium, shaving off another 24kg.
The front half of the chassis is Yaris, however Toyota got clever, adapting the rear from their Corolla / CH-R. The car has 259 more spot welds than a standard Yaris, with 4,175 & 35.4 metres of ‘structural adhesive’, making it seriously rigid!
The only other parts it shares with the normal Yaris is the 2,560mm wheelbase, light clusters, door mirrors and roof fin, nothing else! Overall it looks far angrier, being 55mm longer, 60mm wider and 45mm lower.
The engine is the most powerful production three cylinder engine. The little 1.6-litre unit puts out an impressive 257 bhp and 266 lb-ft!
Its engine is hydraulically mounted on one side, reducing vibration and unwanted movement. This sort of technology is normally associated with supercars. The turbo spins on ball bearings also.
We respect Toyota’s decision to only give the GR a 6 speed manual, illustrating that this is a proper drivers car! 
The 4WD system is claimed to be the lightest on the market with an aluminium central transfer case. In ‘Normal Mode’ the torque is split 60:40 front to rear. This can be altered depending whether you select ‘Sport’ which is 30:70 or ‘Track’ giving a perfect 50:50 split. At the rear there’s an electronically controlled clutch pack dividing torque between the wheels.
So you can choose to give it the old ‘scandinavian flick’, in true rally style or be super accurate and grippy for ultimate pace.
Coming in at 1,280kg, the GR will do 0-60 in 5.5 secs and top out at 143 mph. It feels properly quick on the road and will arguably out run anything that’s sub 30k, and plenty of cars that are well north of this price point… particularly if the road surface / conditions get a bit rough.
