It looks the part throughout. Roof spoiler, gloss black rear diffuser and black tipped exhaust sit alongside 18 inch alloys and black window surrounds. Red sideskirts, a black TI decal and M badged brake calipers set it apart from a standard 1 Series, it wears the the M135i's front bumper and adds red air vents, a blacked out grille and adaptive LED headlights with mean looking DRLs.

Power comes from a 2.0 turbo B48, the baby brother to the B58 in the GR Supra, producing 265bhp and 0 to 60 in around 6 seconds through an 8 speed automatic and Torsen mechanical LSD. Fatter anti roll bars and stiffer sports suspension, both lifted from the M135i, give it a level of cornering confidence you wouldn't expect from a practical hatchback. Add in 4 pot front calipers, a twin scroll single turbo and launch control, and real world runs have shown 0 to 60 under the claimed figure.

The interior carries red stitching throughout, M tricolour stitching on the seatbelts and M logo kick plates, with ambient lighting particularly strong in the door cards. Quality is arguably a step above a Golf GTI's cabin, and there's still room for passengers and isofix points without losing the sporty feel in the back seat. A 380 litre boot keeps it practical, and the full digital cockpit with optional upgraded infotainment brings the tech up to date. The seats feature electronic adjustment with with memory functions.
