Spoon Sports S2000

Spoon Sports S2000

Morgan Gibson |

Spoon Sports built this Honda S2000 as a dedicated race car for Japan's Super Taikyu Series. It proved a strong contender and also won the Fuji 8 Hours in 2015. This is the first time it has left Japan and come to the UK, and it is currently in our hands at Torque GT.

Who Are Spoon Sports?

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver. Honda backed the venture from the start. The company began with Ichishima's own Wonder Civic and that car became the foundation for everything Spoon stands for: develop it on the circuit first and only sell what actually works.

In Japan, Spoon are regarded as one of the most serious Honda tuning and motorsport operations in existence. Their focus has always been on the platforms that matter: the Integra Type R, NSX, S2000 and Civic. They also produce parts for the CR-Z and Jazz but the circuit-focused models are where the brand made its name.

A Racing Record That Stands on Its Own

Spoon's motorsport results are not footnotes. They have won the Super Taikyu ST-4 class championship, the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring, the Tokachi 24 Hours, the Thunderhill 25 Hours and the Tsukuba 9 Hours. These are proper results against properly competitive fields. The brand's credibility comes entirely from what happens on track, not from marketing.

Type One

In 2001 Spoon opened Type One in the Suginami neighbourhood of Tokyo. The main Spoon office handles parts storage and distribution. Type One is the workshop where cars are built, modified and exhibited. It is open to the public and sits in the same compound as the main office. If you have ever wanted to take your Honda to Spoon directly, that is where you go.

How Spoon Builds Engines

Every Spoon engine is hand-built to a tolerance specification where the piston and connecting rod assembly is weight-matched across all four cylinders. Outright power does not increase. What improves is smoothness, throttle response and the engine's willingness to rev. It also holds together because the tolerances are correct. You can see this philosophy applied directly in the F20C assembly sitting in the car below.

"The name Spoon comes from the famous Spoon Curve at Suzuka Circuit, a long sweeping left-hander that demands total commitment. It is an accurate summary of how the company approaches everything it builds."

The Car — Spoon Sports Super Taikyu S2000

This S2000 was built by Spoon from the ground up as a Super Taikyu race car. The aero, drivetrain, suspension and interior exist for one reason. In Super Taikyu competition the engine ran in stock specification, which puts the 2015 results into context. A podium at Sugo and an outright win at the Fuji 8 Hours came from chassis development, driver skill and setup, not from additional power.
