Subaru love a limited-edition model, and the 2005 Impreza WRX STi Spec-C Type RA is another rare variant heavily inspired by their full-fat rally car. Being such a niche model, there’s very little info out there, but a few key features make it particularly unique.
With only 300 units originally planned for production, this is one of the most sought-after WRX STi variants ever built… but who knows how many are still alive and well on the roads today?
Heritage
Based on the Spec-C Impreza (a lightweight, high-performance version of the standard WRX STi), the Type RA takes things a step further. RA stands for Record Attempt, commemorating Subaru’s sub-eight-minute lap at the Nürburgring.
Although it doesn’t quite reach the extreme performance levels of its bigger brother, the Spec-C RA-R, the Type RA still holds its own as a serious piece of Subaru history. Sources vary on production numbers, some state 300, others 350 units, but whichever is true, it remains one of Subaru’s rarest offerings. Being able to source and supply one is a huge privilege!
Hardcore Rally Tech
The Spec-C Type RA was built with rally pedigree at its core. It’s lighter than the standard WRX STi, featuring a lighter subframe plus an aluminium bonnet and boot lid. From what we can tell the weight saving has continued throguhout the interior with stripped-back boot lining, reduced soundproofing, and even door cards that seem slimmed down for weight reduction.
This RA version also sits slightly lower, with stiffer sports suspension, all mounted on 17-inch forged BBS alloys. A stainless steel exhaust paired with equal-length headers gives it that unmistakable Subaru note, while under the bonnet lies the iconic EJ20 twin-scroll turbo engine. Officially rated at 276bhp, in reality it feels more like 350...
