R31 Skyline vs R35 GT-R: Icons of Different Eras

R31 Skyline vs R35 GT-R: Icons of Different Eras - torquegt

The R31 Skyline and R35 GT-R represent distinct eras and philosophies in Nissan's Skyline lineage, each iconic in its own way and appealing to enthusiasts for different reasons.

The R31 Skyline, with its boxy, angular 1980s design, exudes classic, retro JDM charm. It marked the debut of the iconic tail lights that became a defining feature of the Skyline model. As a bit of an unsung hero in the legendary Skyline lineage, it is often overshadowed by the more famous R32, R33, and R34 models. However, if you're looking to capture that retro, classic JDM vibe, the R31 is a top choice.

This particular 1986 Nissan Skyline R31 GTS-X Turbo was sourced directly from Japan for a Personal Import customer. Equipped with the sought-after 5-speed manual gearbox and an original set of Watanabe wheels, it’s easy to see why our customer jumped at the chance to own this car.

When the R35 GT-R was introduced in 2007, it instantly revolutionised the automotive world, staying true to the GT-R's legacy of cutting-edge technology. Nissan engineered the R35 with one goal in mind: to push the boundaries of speed and performance, using the most advanced technologies available.

For enthusiasts looking to own one of these incredible machines, the R35 offers an enticing value proposition, providing exceptional performance at a relatively affordable price. However, in the UK, finding a rust-free example is becoming increasingly difficult due to the climate and road conditions, which can take their toll on the bodywork and chassis over time.

Through our Personal Import Service, we can source far better-preserved examples from Japan. With a wider selection of well-maintained R35s available, importing is a more attractive option than settling for a UK-spec car that may have been exposed to rust and other wear. Recently, we secured a pristine 2013 Nissan GT-R Premium Edition for a Personal Import customer. This particular model has covered only 30,000 kilometres since new, a perfect example of the calibre of vehicles we can source from Japan.

These two freshly imported legends provide an interesting comparison, showing how far Nissan’s halo model has come over five generations. The R31 featured the 2.0L RB20DET engine, producing 190 bhp and 177 lb⋅ft of torque. This six-cylinder turbocharged engine was pivotal in reintroducing the six-cylinder configuration to the Skyline, something that hadn’t been seen since the iconic "Kenmeri" C110 generation of the early 1970s. It laid the groundwork for the legendary RB26DETT in later GT-R models. For its time, the R31 offered an impressive balance of smoothness and power.

By contrast, the R35 is powered by a 3.8L twin-turbo V6 (the VR38DETT), which produces significantly more power, with over 500 bhp in standard models and even higher in special editions. The R35 has an advanced all-wheel-drive system and lightning-quick dual-clutch transmission, giving it supercar-slaying acceleration and incredible handling.

The R31’s appeal lies in its simplicity, classic mechanical feel, and nostalgia, whereas the R35 is a tech powerhouse with multiple drive modes and an onboard telemetry system that tracks performance metrics. Over its extended production run, which finally ended in 2024, the R35 saw numerous upgrades, facelifts, and special editions, maintaining its place as a state-of-the-art machine.

The R31 Skyline is a lesser-known model, making it a left-field choice for enthusiasts. Its relative rarity and affordable pricing (compared to the skyrocketing prices of the R32 and R34) make it attractive to collectors looking for something unique with a distinct place in Nissan’s history.

The R35 GT-R, however, stands as a modern icon of speed, performance, and technology, appealing to those looking for a cutting-edge driving experience. Both models highlight Nissan’s commitment to performance and innovation, but they cater to different kinds of enthusiasts.

If you’re looking for a high quality example, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We can source your dream car through our Personal Import Service.
