Who Are Spoon Sports?

Spoon Sports was founded in 1988 by Tatsuru Ichishima, a former Honda race car tester and driver. The company started with Ichishima's own Wonder Civic and built from there into one of the most respected Honda tuning and motorsport operations in Japan. Honda backed the venture from the start and Ichishima's approach has never really changed: develop everything on the circuit first and sell only what actually works.

In Japan, Spoon are known as a leading force in time trials and endurance racing using the Integra Type R, NSX, S2000 and Civic. Their race wins include the Super Taikyu ST-4 class championship, the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring, the Tokachi 24 Hours, the Thunderhill 25 Hours and the Tsukuba 9 Hours. That is not a marketing portfolio — those are proper racing results against serious competition.

"The name Spoon comes from the famous Spoon Curve at Suzuka Circuit, a long sweeping left-hander that demands total commitment. It sums up the company's approach about as well as anything could." Torque GT

Type One — The Workshop

In 2001 Spoon opened Type One in the Suginami neighbourhood of Tokyo. The main office handles parts distribution. Type One is where the cars are built, modified and exhibited and it is open to the public if you want to take your own car in. The two operations sit in the same compound, which tells you a lot about how the brand is structured.

How Spoon Builds Engines

Every Spoon engine is hand-built to a tolerance specification where the piston and connecting rod assembly is weight-matched across all four cylinders. Outright power does not increase. What improves is smoothness, throttle response and the engine's willingness to rev. Reliability holds up because the tolerances are right. This is the philosophy behind the F20C assembly in the car you are looking at on our stand.

The Car — Spoon Sports Super Taikyu S2000

This S2000 was built by Spoon as a dedicated race car for Super Taikyu competition. It is not a modified road car. The aero, drivetrain, suspension and interior were all put together with one purpose. In Super Taikyu competition the engine ran in stock specification and these results came from chassis development and setup, not from turning up the power.

"We have been distributing Spoon parts in the UK and EU for years. Bringing this car over to show at JapFest felt like the right way to put some context around what the brand actually is. Most people know the name. Fewer people have stood next to one of their actual race cars." Torque GT

Come and See It at JapFest 2026

The car is on the Torque GT stand for the duration of the event alongside Takuya Kai, President of Spoon Sports, who has made the trip over from Japan for JapFest 2026. If you want to see the S2000 in the metal and speak to the man behind the brand, come and find us.
