A GR86 in RC trim is pretty unheard of in the UK and very rare to see in person, but that's because Toyota never sent it here. The RC is the entry level version sold only in Japan, built for people who wanted a lighter, cheaper, more focused GR86 rather than one loaded with kit they'd probably strip out anyway. Essentially this variation is a blank canvas for those who want to go racing.
The GR86 RC Story

While the standard GR86 has spent its development rounding off the rough edges of the old GT86, the RC retains the essentials which make this GR86 amazing to drive, whilst stripping things back rather than adding to them. Toyota built this trim for the JDM market only, aimed squarely at drivers who wanted a blank canvas rather than a finished product, and it undercuts every other GR86 trim.

Step outside and the giveaway is obvious. It sits on 16 inch steel wheels wrapped in narrower 205/55R16 tyres, a size down from the 17s and 18s you'll find on Premium models.

Inside, the RC keeps things simpler still with no cruise control, radio, floor mats, boot lights, rear fog lights or vanity mirror lights. Less underfloor sound insulation. Fabric seats with PVC trim everywhere else, though the steering wheel stays leather. Only 2 speakers instead of the usual 4 or 6 and no boot liner. This example has had an aftermarket stereo fitted.

None of that is a downside if you're buying this car for the right reasons. Every deleted feature is weight and cost taken out of a car that was already one of the best balanced sports coupes Toyota has built in years.
Why the RC Still Delivers Where It Counts

Underneath, this is still a proper GR86, with the same 2.4 litre naturally aspirated flat four producing 231bhp, paired exclusively with a 6 speed manual gearbox with no automatic option in sight. Toyota also carried the Torsen limited slip differential over to the RC this generation, which is essential for anyone planning to track the car or simply enjoy it properly on a B road.
Why This Is a Smart Import Right Now
The RC was never sold outside Japan, so importing is the only route to owning one in the UK. With standard GR86 numbers already tight over here, an RC is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to modify a GR86 and use it as Gazoo Racing intended.

This makes it an appealing prospect for a specific type of buyer. If you were always going to strip your GR86 for track use anyway, fitting coilovers, a roll cage and lightweight seats, the RC hands you a head start, and whatever you save by skipping kit you were going to remove regardless can be reinvested straight into suspension, wheels or whatever else the build needs.
