In the world of performance saloons, badges like M, AMG, and RS command instant respect. Lexus takes a different path with its “F” division. Japan’s answer to Germany’s high-performance icons, delivering a blend of precision engineering, reliability, and Japanese craftsmanship.
The “F” pays homage to Fuji Speedway, where Lexus fine-tunes these machines. The journey began in 2007 with the IS F, a car designed to challenge the BMW M3, featuring a 5.0-liter V8 and engineering built to last.
Let’s explore what makes the IS F special and why it’s on track to become a modern classic.
The naturally aspirated 5.0L V8, co-developed with Yamaha delivers a thumping 417 bhp and 371 lb-ft of torque, producing an exhaust note that's directly from the car gods.
It’s not just about raw power, there’s well thought out engineering behind it. The 2UR-GSE V8 is a technical marvel, featuring a two-stage intake system, dedicated coolers for engine oil and automatic gearbox fluid, and an oil pump designed to handle high-speed cornering. All this was paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
The IS F’s performance is impressive, especially for the late 2000s, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 173 mph.
Fast forward to 2024, the IS F has become a rare sight on UK roads, with far fewer examples than its German rivals. Lexus initially allocated just 150 units to the UK market in its debut year.
Due to their rarity, importing the Lexus IS F from Japan has become a popular option for our Personal Import Service clients. Japanese examples are generally far better maintained and boast lower mileage.
In classic Lexus style, the IS F feels solid, over-engineered, and incredibly reliable, which has kept residuals strong.
In addition to this IS F, we’ve also sourced other IS models through our Personal Import Service, including the IS 350 variant. Sitting just below the IS F in the lineup, the IS 350 was never sold in the UK.
Powered by a 3.5L V6 producing 306 bhp and 277 lb-ft of torque, the IS 350 achieves 0-60 in under six seconds. Compared to the UK-spec IS 250, the 350 offers significantly more performance while maintaining the same exceptional Lexus build quality.
For those who don’t want to stretch their budget to an IS F, the IS 350 presents a more affordable option with lower running costs, making it a more practical daily driver. But if rarity and the allure of a V8 is what you seek, the IS F is the one to go for.
Lexus’s F division has established a strong reputation, offering a distinct alternative to its German rivals. Whether it’s the IS F, the M5-challenging GS F, or their crowning achievement—the stunning V10-powered LFA—Lexus’s F cars deserve to be celebrated.
